This photo book is a story about North and South Korea.The photographer, Ray, is a South Korean.Ray wants to share with the world of all the stories of meeting both South Koreans and North Koreans in the UK.It is not easy to meet North Koreans while living in South Korea however, Ray was lucky to meet North Koreans in the UK.North Koreans distrust the media.Unlike the stories shown to us through media, the media has used their voice for exaggerated and compelling stories that gain the attraction - for their own benefit. For this reason, Ray has to spend a lot of time persuading the North Koreans.Ray was able to complete this project by investing in time to show what we all wanted.The first chapter shows the life of a North Korean family.Ray was able to step into their life and capture their lifestyle into his pictures.In the second chapter, Ray shot the backs of both South Koreans and North Koreans.The reason why he shot their backs was to protect the safety and the identity of North Koreans.He mixed photographs of South Koreans and North Koreans to represent a unified nation and voice.If someone was to ask Ray, ‘Where are you from?’ he is likely to reply with ‘South Korean.’While Ray interviewed North Koreans, he was able to hear from them stories about their thoughts regarding their identity. ‘Nobody calls us South Korean or North Korean.’Therefore, Ray names the title: ‘We are Korean.’This book was created by photographer Ray in attempt to spread the message of a unified Korea.
